Course Description:
English Poetry Appreciation is an elective for English majors. The aim of the course is for students to obtain an understanding of important poets (Shakespeare through modernist poets) in various literary movements (British and American groups such as the Metaphysical Poets, the Lake Poets, the Charter Poets, the former Rafael School, the Imagists, the Chicago School, the Confessionalists, and the Montenegro Poets). Students study sonnets, monologues, elegies, epics, eclogues, light poems, and heroic couplets, leading them to an advanced ability to evaluate poetry and poetic trends, and this leads also to a strengthening of their humanistic awareness.
